The beauty of a bike tour for seniors is that you don’t necessarily need to be a regular cyclist or terribly fit. They attract those who are interested in exploring corners of Europe by bike in a relaxed way that focuses on comfort, culture and cuisine.
Bikes tours designed for seniors are a great way to experience a place: cycling along scenic paths, meeting locals, and small moments you would miss from a coach window.
The exercise involved with riding and the camaraderie of travelling with like-minded people mean bike tours (at any age) are a lot of fun. With e-bikes opening the door to even more riders, it’s easier than ever to join in.
In this interview, we speak to Lenny Versteeg of BikePlanet Tours. Her family-run team has been delivering guided bike and boat holidays across Europe since 2017, where guests on board are typically aged 60 to 90+. Although Lenny has recently passed management of her barge, IRIS, to her sons, who now deliver the cycling trips, she still regularly joins departures and remains closely involved.
Whether you are rediscovering cycling or embracing it for the first time in years, Lenny explains why a bike tour can be such a fulfilling experience. Read on for proof that adventure does not come with an age limit!

Part 1: Why are bike tours perfect for seniors?
Age is just a number, and the word “senior” should never suggest that getting out on a bike is off limits! In fact, for many people, it marks a stage of life with a little more freedom and time to try something new.
Cycling tours offer a fulfilling way to stay active, explore at your own pace and enjoy the outdoors in a meaningful way. They also create natural opportunities to meet like-minded travellers, share experiences, and build friendships along the way.
For anyone who values fresh air, open landscapes and gentle daily movement, Europe presents exceptional possibilities! Its extensive network of well-maintained, largely traffic-free cycling paths makes it easy to cover satisfying distances while enjoying a steady, low-impact workout.
Deeper cultural immersion
Cycling moves at the perfect “slow travel” tempo. You can pause at a village market, chat to a local, or peek into a courtyard you’d never spot from a car or coach. The landscape, smells, and street life roll by at eye level: it’s travel with all your senses switched on.
With BikePlanet Tours, you benefit from friendly, region-savvy guides who ride with the group, sharing the stories behind what you’re seeing. They enable you to better understand the local history and traditions, and where to find the best cake and coffee! They’ll help with language quirks, explain customs, and point out the small details that bring a place to life.
Camaraderie with like-minded travellers
Group cycling is a social experience: you share coffee stops, swap stories on the cycle path, and make friends during mealtimes. All of this helps to support general well-being. Research also shows that social connections are important for brain health as we age (source).
On BikePlanet Tours, the social side is a big part of the holiday. Our ship IRIS carries around 24 guests in 12 cabins and features welcoming communal spaces, including a sun deck, dining room, and a comfortable lounge with a bar (plus board games). These spaces make it easy to chat, unwind and compare the day’s highlights.
We also see many solo travellers on bike and barge trips; the small-group rides and shared mealtimes make it easy to connect with fellow cyclists and your guides.
Low-impact health benefits
Cycling is gentle on weight-bearing joints because your body is supported by the bike. Despite being low-impact, cycling still raises the heart rate and builds stamina, making it ideal for active travel. This is especially important if you suffer from arthritis, and cycling has even been shown to help improve these symptoms (source).
NHS guidance for older adults also suggests regular moderate-intensity activity (such as riding a bike) for at least 150 minutes a week. According to them, it can provide improved health benefits and reduce the risk of heart disease (source). So a cycling holiday fits the bill perfectly! On a BikePlanet Tours holiday, you’ll ride every day of the tour on manageable distances. More on this below.
Tours for a range of abilities
Good operators grade trips so you can pick the right level to suit your riding ability. Many also offer e-bikes as an upgrade on easier itineraries. That makes it easier for newcomers to keep up with the group’s pace and keep the daily riding more comfortable.
At BikePlanet Tours we offer gentle daily distances and include e-bike hire, which means our tours are well equipped for a range of cycling abilities – no matter what your age or fitness level. We also offer options to shorten or sit out a ride, providing further flexibility and peace of mind. More on this below.
Part 2: What makes a bike tour senior-friendly?
What daily mileage and terrain should I expect?
If you’re looking for your first bike tour, consider how challenging the cycling will be and whether it will be within the range of what you’ll be comfortable with. Aim for daily distances you could happily repeat over multiple days, and don’t forget to check what sort of surfaces you will be riding on and the daily elevation gains, as these both have an impact on the level of challenge required.
We typically find most people on our tours want active travel at a gentle pace, with plenty of time for coffee stops, photos and sightseeing. That’s why BikePlanet routes are around 40 kilometres (25 miles) a day and mostly on flat, well-signposted cycle paths that follow rivers and canals. Where riverside trails don’t exist, guides choose quiet, low-traffic roads.

How do guides and support make bike tours easier for seniors?
Having support takes the pressure off. Guides remove the hassle of navigation, keep the group safe, handle punctures and small tweaks, and set an achievable pace. This means you can relax and enjoy the scenery instead of worrying about maps or mechanics.
On BikePlanet Tours, you ride with experienced, knowledgeable guides who deliver a clear daily briefing, agree meet points and carry tools and spares you might need during the day.
What should you look for in accommodation?
Place-to-place tours often mean a new hotel every night. A centre-based holiday, or boat and bike holiday, makes things logistically easier. You unpack once, can get comfortable in your own dedicated room or cabin, and return to the same familiar place each evening.
On the premium IRIS, there are 12 en suite cabins plus generous shared spaces, including a sun deck, dining room, and a comfy lounge with a bar. Meals are cooked on board, with dietary needs catered for, and hot drinks are available throughout the day.

How big are the groups, and how is the pace managed?
Group size shapes the feel of your cycling holiday. Smaller groups make it easier to keep together, find seats at cafés, and get quick help from guides. Good tour operators will usually split riders by pace, so you can choose a steadier or livelier group each day and still enjoy the same sights.
Expect clear meet points, regular regrouping, and a “no one left behind” approach. The focus should be on comfortable, sociable riding, rather than speed and competition.
BikePlanet’s daily cycle rides are usually split into two, offering a faster and a slower pace to suit different cycling abilities. We have two guides for 25 guests, and group cycling sizes are typically around 12 guests each. However this number can be more or less, depending on people’s pace preference each day.
Be aware! We always ask for someone from the group to volunteer as a sweep at the back, so no one is left behind.

What bike hire options should I consider (and why does it matter)?
Choosing the right bike can make or break your holiday, especially for seniors new to cycle touring. The right setup keeps you comfortable, confident and able to repeat the miles day after day.
Two popular options to consider are:
- Hybrid bikes with sensible gearing and wider tyres for stable, confident handling on mixed surfaces.
- E-bikes (pedal assist) that help flatten hills and extend range, perfect if you’d like extra support while still enjoying the ride.
At BikePlanet Tours, hire bikes are fitted to your height, with time to test and adjust on day one. Panniers make carrying layers and lunch easy. Helmets and bottles are provided. Availability of e-bikes can be limited on some barges, so it’s worth requesting early. You can also bring your own bike!

Part 3: What are the different bike tour options?
If you’re new to cycling holidays, there are a few great ways to travel by bike, each with its own perks.
For those seeking a gentle cycling holiday, routes and regions with flat or rolling terrain, river valleys and dedicated cycle paths tend to be popular with our guests. You should check the bike tour’s daily distances and total elevation gain to understand the level of challenge. Also, look for luggage transfers, e-bike hire options and full service options like bike and boat tours. More on that below.
Top tip! We may be biased, given we are based here, but the Netherlands is a good place to start. Largely flat riding and a superb cycling infrastructure make things safe and easy.
Below is a breakdown of the main options to consider, so you can choose the style that suits your pace, confidence and comfort:
What are bike and boat holidays?
A boat is your floating hotel for the duration of the bike tour. As mentioned previously, this offers less hassle for guests because you don’t have to worry about constantly packing your luggage and moving on to another hotel each day.
It’s low fuss, wonderfully social and also enables guests the freedom to skip a ride and relax on board if you fancy a rest!
BikePlanet Tours specialise in this type of bike tour, and many of our holidays include staying aboard IRIS, a characterful riverboat.

What are e-bike tours for seniors?
For those seeking extra support, an e-bike tour offers you the peace of mind that you’ll be able to comfortably ride the routes each day.
Some tour operators offer itineraries that are e-bike only (so the pace stays even and no one feels left at the back). Many bike tours now offer e-bikes as an upgrade, including most BikePlanet trips. But reserve early as numbers can be limited!
Guided vs self-guided: what’s the difference?
Guided group tours add structure and peace of mind: leaders handle navigation, set a comfortable pace, sort mechanical niggles and share local stories. Some also offer a support van for additional assistance.
Alternatively, self-guided bike tours suit confident navigators who want more independence with friends or family. You’ll still have pre-booked accommodation, route notes, and hire bike, but you’ll manage your own timing and any basic fixes you may encounter, like a puncture.
Both options provide pros and cons, so deciding which is best for you comes down to your personal preference for how much support you want.

Part 4: What are the best bike trips for seniors and why?
BikePlanet guests are typically aged between 60 to 90+ years old, so nearly all of our itineraries are senior-friendly.
We find that the bike and boat format is especially convenient for older guests, thanks to ease of accommodation logistics, gentle riding options and access to airports.
Below are three standout European bike tours for seniors to consider from our range. Be aware! As testament to how popular these tours are, many 2026 dates are now fully booked. We will be adding 2027 departures soon.
1. The Tulip Tour
If you’re new to cycling holidays, the Netherlands is a dream: pancake-flat terrain, world-class cycle paths and short scenic stages with cafés, markets and museums dotted along the route.
In April, tulips add vibrant colour! This is the perfect time to visit if you want to experience the country’s world-famous spring bulbs in full bloom.
More information
Head to BikePlanet Tours’ website to find out more about the Tulip Tour.
We also have a new tour coming in 2027, combining the Tulip Tour with a wider Netherlands roundtrip. Alongside the opportunity to see the country’s iconic blooms, the bike tour will also include visits to some of the Netherlands’ loveliest historic centres, such as Groningen and the Wadden Sea, and the old Zuiderzee, now IJsselmeer, with its polders. The tour will also include a visit to the picturesque water village of Giethoorn, where houses are connected by canals.

2. Paris to Amsterdam, France, Belgium and The Netherlands
This city-to-city adventure is jam-packed with cultural treasures! You touch down in Paris, meet your guide and drift past the famous sights on a dinner cruise before a comfortable overnight stay in the heart of the city. The next morning, a private coach carries you to beautiful Bruges, where there’s time to wander the cobbles before boarding IRIS, your floating hotel for the rest of the journey.
From here, it’s easy daily riding along picturesque waterways towards Amsterdam, with highlights such as Antwerp’s historic centre and the UNESCO World Heritage Kinderdijk Windmills en route. The tour wraps up in another gorgeous European capital, Amsterdam. This gives you straightforward access to Schiphol Airport for a hassle-free flight home. This tour is ideal if you want gentle mileage, rich history and logistics that just work.

3. Prague to Frankfurt, Czech Republic to Germany
This is a bike tour rich in old-world charm! You begin in storybook Prague with a hotel stay and a relaxed dinner cruise. The next morning, a private coach takes you to Bamberg, whose UNESCO-listed Old Town sets the scene. Here you board IRIS, your floating hotel for the week.
Daily rides trace the Main River cycle path, celebrated for its smooth surfaces, clear signage and gentle gradients, ideal for easy, repeatable miles.
You’ll roll through Franconian wine country, past pretty vineyards and small wine villages, dip into Bavarian forests, and spend time in the Baroque splendour of Würzburg. The half-timbered lanes of Miltenberg town are another highlight before you cruise into Frankfurt for simple onward travel via the international airport.

Part 5: What to look for when booking a bike tour?
How can I judge a company’s reputation with senior travellers?
Look for operators that regularly host guests over the age of 60 and can explain how they tailor pace, routes and support.
Check independent reviews, ask for typical daily mileage/elevation, and confirm there’s a clear “no one left behind” policy.
Experience also matters! Long-running companies tend to have polished logistics, well-briefed guides, and tried-and-tested contingency plans (things like weather reroute plans, support for mechanicals and alternative transport options).
What medical and travel insurance do I need?
We’d suggest choosing a cover that explicitly includes cycling, medical care abroad, repatriation, trip interruption, and cancellation. Pre-existing conditions should be declared and covered in writing. Pack a simple med list and bring any regular medication in its original packaging. If concerned, ask the operator about hospital access on the route and how they handle any emergencies (guide phone numbers, local contacts).
Can I customise the trip?
Good operators are flexible. Ask about shorter daily options, pace-split groups, and the chance to skip a stage (e.g. relax on the boat or transfer to the next stop). If your partner doesn’t ride, confirm non-cycling activities, that there are easy meet-ups at cafés or sights, and how they can rejoin for meals and evenings.

What’s included in the price?
Read the inclusions line by line. Typical value adds are accommodation, breakfast and most dinners, guided rides or route notes, luggage transfers (for hotel tours), bike hire (or a clear upgrade price for e-bikes), and rest-day options.
Also, check what’s not included: lunches, bar drinks, city taxes, cultural site entries, and gratuities are typically extras you’ll need to pay for on top of the tour price. For boat-based trips, confirm cabin type, dietary catering, tea/coffee access and so on…
Clear inclusions mean fewer surprises during your bike tour and a smoother holiday!
Part 6: How can you prepare for a bicycle tour?
What simple training should I do beforehand?
Trying to get out for a few rides before your bike and barge tour is excellent preparation. Working up to riding for at least an hour without a break will help build your comfort in the saddle.
Top tip! If you have not ridden an e-bike before and plan to use one on the trip, it is well worth trying one in advance. Spending a little time getting used to the assistance levels, weight, and handling will help you feel confident and relaxed from day one.
How do I choose the right bike (and stay comfy in the saddle)?
Pick a bike that suits your fitness ability: a hybrid is great for more experienced cyclists who are confident riding each day, or choose an e-bike if you are concerned about the mileage.
The fit of your bike is also important. Set saddle height so your leg is almost straight with your heel on the pedal, keep the reach easy on your shoulders, and raise the bars slightly for a relaxed posture. You might also want to consider bringing your own saddle seat, or gel seat cover, and pedals for extra comfort on hybrid bikes.

What should I pack?
Aim for light, quick-dry layers you can easily rotate, padded shorts, jerseys, a windproof or light waterproof, a gilet and a warm evening layer, plus cycling gloves and a cap or buff. Alongside lightweight waterproof layers, don’t forget sun protection, including sunglasses.
Other useful things to consider include chargers, a power bank and an adaptor and travel documents. You’ll also want some comfortable, casual clothes to wear to dinner each night.
You should bring copies of prescriptions and insurance details and have these in an easy-to-reach pocket.

How do I manage fitness and energy on tour?
Ride at a pace you could repeat tomorrow. Drink little and often, and snack regularly so your energy never dips. Warm up with a few easy minutes at the start and stretch briefly after each ride.
Prioritise sleep, and if you need it, take a rest day on the boat without guilt. Tell your guide early about any niggles you may encounter on the bike so they can tweak pace or the day’s plan.
Part 7: What does BikePlanet offer?
Since 2011, BikePlanet Tours has specialised in senior-friendly bike and barge trips in Europe and further afield.
Many of our tours include accommodation aboard a boat, including IRIS, a ship now proudly owned by my sons, Wouter and Tim. IRIS offers a relaxing, memorable place to unwind each day!
Take a look at this video below for a quick insight into what you can expect on a tour with BikePlanet:

Local support
Our guests are supported by experienced, English-speaking guides who handle navigation, set a comfortable pace (often with pace-split groups), fix any mechanicals, and are only too happy to share local stories.
You’ll also get a clear welcome briefing and short evening briefings that outline tomorrow’s route, café stops and options, including the chance to take a rest day on the barge if you fancy a breather.
Manageable daily rides
We focus on the details that matter to senior travellers: manageable daily stages, e-bike availability for extra support, straightforward logistics with easy airport and rail connections, and added cultural experiences such as guided walks or excursions on many departures.
On average, we ride at around ten kilometres per hour for approximately five hours. This always includes regular stops for sightseeing and refreshments along the way. The tours are not built around speed or performance. Instead, the emphasis is on enjoying each day at a relaxed, comfortable pace.
Our role is to take care of the planning and practicalities, so you can simply arrive, ride at your own rhythm and make the most of the journey.
