In this guide, we’ve pulled together the best cycling hotels the Algarve offers. Some of these are just great hotels that welcome all guests, while others have facilities specifically tailored to a cycling holiday. Bike hotels in the western Algarve (Lagos and Sagres)

The area around Lagos and Sagres in the west of the Algarve, tend to be one of the quieter areas for a cycling break in the Algarve – both the crowds and the traffic tend to be lighter.

Lagos itself is a beautiful historic city, and the countryside nearby is wonderfully scenic. You can also cycle out to the Atlantic coastline, although be prepared for the often powerful breeze!

The Monchique Resort is a five-star getaway in the Monchique mountain range. It combines inspiration from its natural surroundings with modern touches to create luxurious accommodations and outstanding facilities, including two outdoor pools, an exquisite spa and a choice of restaurants.

It’s a fantastic choice for a climbing cycle holiday with easy access to some challenging but beautiful routes. There’s no cycling centre on-site but secure storage, including CCTV coverage, is available, and there’s a small workshop space if you do need to carry out any quick repairs. Laundry services and bike rental are also available.

  • We love: The amazing surroundings – it’s a hub of luxury amongst fantastic natural routes
  • Be aware: While not an adults-only hotel, there’s limited attraction for families here unless your kids are active cyclists.

The Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve is a five-star hotel in Lagos offering contemporary accommodation with a huge range of facilities. Guests can enjoy fantastic views out to the coast, as well as an international restaurant, outdoor and indoor pools, and a fitness centre.

The Agua Hotels Riverside Hotel is a four-star hotel in Ferragudo. It has its own private marina, making for some very scenic views across the river. Rooms are tastefully decorated and there is plenty for guests to enjoy on-site, including a riverside restaurant, a terrace, a bar and a spa with massage rooms.

The hotel has pedigree for cycling breaks – for example, Team Emirates used the hotel in January 2023 for a winter training camp. Bike storage is provided, there are excellent cycling routes nearby, and meal times are flexible to suit anyone looking for an early start or a late lunch to recover from a ride.

The Cascade Wellness Resort is a beautiful five-star hotel in Lagos that is popular for guests who want to unwind and those who wish to train. While it’s not necessarily a cycling team resort, it has been used by professional football teams, including the Dutch and Welsh national football teams, indicating the quality of the facilities on-site.

The hotel welcomes cyclists, and while it doesn’t offer bike rental directly, they do have close partnerships with local bike stores and can arrange premium bike rental for guests. They also have areas inside the hotel where you’ll be able to store your bike, although you’ll need your own tools if any repair work is needed.

  • We love: How seriously this resort takes sport – equipment and resources are all top-notch.
  • Be aware: If you want to cycle as soon as you get to the hotel, it’s best to call in advance and pre-arrange rental.

The Martinhal Sagres Hotel is a stunning five-star resort hotel on the outskirts of Sagres, situated overlooking the beach. The hotel has everything families could need, including five different pools and three restaurants to choose from. It’s great for kids, with indoor and outdoor play areas.

Martinhal is a good base for luxury cycling breaks – there’s an onsite centre that offers rentals (including premium road bikes), and secure storage. You can also rent gear if you need it, while there’s a wash station and workshop for maintenance. Cycle routes are provided including GPX uploads. They run three weekly scheduled tours, which includes a family tour, as well as a mountain bike ride and a road bike tour. These tours can also be booked privately upon request.

The AP Adriana Beach Resort is just 300 metres from the beach in Albufeira, and is surrounded by beautiful gardens for a really picturesque setting. The four-star resort offers a wide range of facilities, including three restaurants and four pools – two of which are for children. There are other family-friendly facilities too, including a kids club.

Cyclists can hire a bike from the hotel with ease, and there’s a spa offering massages when you need to recover. The staff can recommend good routes nearby – indeed, the reviews of the hotel talk about just how friendly and professional they are across the whole hotel.

The Hotel Zodiaco in Quarteira is a bright, simple three-star hotel with an outdoor pool. It’s basic accommodation, but it’s clean and welcoming, with a hotel bar and snack bar and plenty of local restaurants close by for dinner. Families are welcome but facilities are limited, with the pool and a billiards table providing the entertainment.

There aren’t a wealth of facilities for cyclists, but you can hire bikes and there is secure parking for bicycles available. There are nearby bicycle stores if you need help with repairs or maintenance. This hotel doesn’t try to provide everything for a training camp, but is great for a cheap and simple Algarve biking holiday.

  • Be aware: There’s no evening restaurant on-site and cycling facilities are limited.
  • Best for: A great value stay with easy access to coast roads.

Bike hotels in eastern Algarve (Tavira)

The eastern Algarve area around Tavira offers some very scenic flat coastal routes, with amazing views across the sea and the long, stretching beaches. Head inland and you’ll find some hilly challenges too.

Tavira is a vibrant and historic city that serves as a good base, and from here you can even cycle towards Spain if you prefer!

The Colina Verde Resort is located between Olhao and Tavira, in a quieter location. The four-star hotel is perfectly suited to a calm escape away from the crowds, and has everything you need onsite, including a restaurant and two outdoor pools. It’s also a sports hotel and has been used by professional football teams along with many amateur cycling clubs as a base.

Cyclists can enjoy all of the leisure facilities at the hotel, along with storage for their bikes in between rides. The hotel can also provide special meal requests including packed lunches if you want to plan a longer ride away from the hotel for a day.

  • We love: The peaceful location of the hotel and the excellent cycling routes nearby.
  • Be aware: The hotel is a short drive or bike ride from the nearest local shops, restaurants or the beach – it’s quite remote.
  • Best for: Serious sport enthusiasts or anyone who wants their cycling base to be away from the crowds.

The Golden Club Cabanas resort is situated right amongst the Ria Formosa Natura Park, around a 10 minute drive from Tavira. The three-star accommodation is simple but cosy and there are plenty of facilities onsite to keep everyone entertained, including indoor and outdoor pools, sports courts and playgrounds for children, long with a kids’ club.

The accommodation is made up of self-catered apartments so you can prep your own packed lunches (there’s a SPAR 400 metres away), although the restaurant is also open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, if you prefer. Bike hire is available from the hotel, and a spa offers massages.

  • We love: The lively resort feel and the beautiful scenery along nearby cycle routes.
  • Be aware: Prices double during summer, but winter cycling breaks are very cheap.
  • Best for: Family breaks or more casual cycling holidays along the Algarve coastline.

The Vila Gale Tavira is a relaxed four-star hotel near the centre of Tavira and within easy reach of the coast. It has its own restaurant serving Portuguese and international cuisine, and a health club with gym, indoor pool and Turkish bath. There’s a large outdoor pool as well, and a kids club for families.

The hotel has daily bicycle hire, along with laundry services for any riders who want to get their gear cleaned before the next day’s ride. A buffet breakfast is available early too, for anyone who wants to make an early start exploring the nearby scenery.

  • We love: The location – a short walk to Tavira’s shops and restaurants, easy access for the beach and plenty of great cycling routes on the doorstep.
  • Be aware: The hotel is a little old-fashioned in places but is perfectly comfortable.
  • Best for: A holiday that balances cycling, beach sunbathing and exploration of the local bars and shops.
