Cycling hotels in the heart of Girona

If you love historic architecture, then Girona cycling hotels in the heart of the city will certainly appeal. The beautiful old town is right on your doorstep, and cycling through the weaving streets around the Cathedral is an easy way to explore.

1. Hotel Històric, Girona

Hotel Històric is a four-star hotel situated right in the heart of the Girona old town. It’s a country-style hotel that combines exposed wooden beams and stone walls with modern bathrooms and soft furnishings, to create a cosy atmosphere where you can relax. It manages to be one of the best luxury hotels Girona has to offer, without losing that warm welcome of a smaller venue.

We’ve heard the owners are passionate cyclists themselves, so can offer their own advice on the best local routes that you can explore. Secure bike storage is also available at the hotel.

  • We love: The bedrooms are soundproofed, so getting a good rest is a little easier.
  • Be aware: It provides breakfast but no restaurant or bar. No car park and the hotel is at the top of a hill.
  • Best for: Combining cycling with sightseeing, being so close to the historic city centre.

2. Hotel Nord 1901, Girona

Hotel Nord 1901 is located just a short walk from the historic cathedral and offers a touch of style and luxury to its guests. This four-star option is one of the best hotels in Girona – it has modern, spacious rooms, although be aware that the interior-facing rooms can be a little dark.

A buffet breakfast is included, served on the beautiful terrace when the weather suits. And there’s a secure bike storage facility offered, with the option of taking your bike into your room too if you prefer.

  • We love: The stylish garden terrace with pool.
  • Be aware: The nearest car park is a short distance away and charges around €21 a day.
  • Best for: Anyone who wants a luxurious base for their cycling break.

3. Hotel Ultonia, Girona

Hotel Ultonia is a modern and comfortable three-star rated hotel situated in the very heart of Girona, less than a five-minute walk from the Cathedral, Old Town and the incredible Arabic baths. Rooms are decorated in a modern, simple style and there’s a café bar and buffet breakfast available.

The hotel has its own car park. Bicycles can be stored either in the dedicated storage area or they are permitted in rooms. If you want a bike hotel in Girona right amongst everything, this is a good choice.

  • We love: The roof terrace with views of the Cathedral.
  • Be aware: There is a surcharge for the car park and it is quite narrow. Alternatives are available close by.
  • Best for: Anyone who wants to be right amongst the city centre.

4. Casa Cundaro, Girona

Casa Cundaro is a small guesthouse-style accommodation option set in a traditional Jewish house amongst the Jewish Quarter, and converted into a mix of bedrooms and self-contained apartments. It’s a three-star property with simple décor and furnishings, made all the more charming by its exposed stone walls.

It’s a secondary property to the larger Hotel Històric, and while it has its own internal courtyard that’s the best option for cycle storage, some guests prefer to store their bikes in the storage room at the hotel, instead of at Casa Cundaro itself.

  • We love: The rustic stone walls and historic charm.
  • Be aware: The Cathedral is very close by and you will hear its bells.
  • Best for: Anyone who loves a more quaint guesthouse feel.

Cycling hotels close to Girona’s old town

Staying on the outskirts of Girona means you’re able to enjoy Girona’s larger bike hotels with a wider array of facilities on-site, for example a restaurant on-site so you don’t need to find somewhere to eat if you’ve had a long ride and just want to stay in the hotel. Girona’s historic centre is still close at hand, so these are still good choices for cycle accommodation within easy reach of key facilities.

5. Hotel Peninsular, Girona

Hotel Peninsular is a bright and clean three-star hotel located within a short distance of the historic attractions of Girona’s centre. It’s also amongst the lively nightlife, which may be a good or bad thing depending on what you’re looking for from your break.

Across the street from the hotel there’s a separate bike garage. Rooms are really simple and functional but pleasant, and there’s a good selection of places to eat close by.

  • We love: The location, not right at the heart of the city but very close.
  • Be aware: There’s no car park, but they work with a local car park
  • Best for: Anyone who wants to experience the Girona nightlife.

The hotel is great for athletes – as well as a large outdoor pool and gym, there are sports massages available on request, so resting the muscles after a longer countryside trail is easy enough. And with the on-site restaurant open for breakfast and dinner you’ve everything you need in one place.

  • We love: The outdoor pool and the sports massage facilities.
  • Be aware: The hotel is at the top of a hill – save some energy to get back at the end of the day.

The hotel has a large cycle storage room so you’ll have no trouble locking up your bike, and there’s a spa offering some treatments, although don’t expect intensive sports massages.

  • We love: The ample bike storage and rooftop pool.
  • Be aware: The hotel does have a car park, but it costs 14 Euros per day.
  • Best for: Anyone who feels comfortable in a modern, good quality chain hotel.

It’s a great hotel for cyclists – the hotel has a large bike storage facility and a repair shop on-site too. The restaurant even offers special menus with dishes “adapted to athlete’s diets”, should you want the best nutrition on your break.

4 Responses to “Where to stay in Girona
(for cyclists):
Girona cycling hotels, apartments + training camps”

  1. We stayed in the Hotel Ciutat de Girona last week. Very cyclist friendly, right in the heart of the city and close to everything. They have a superb bike store in the basement with full tools etc. Breakfast was excellent and the staff really helpful.

  2. Posting these notes on behalf of reader, Darrin Bizruchak, with his permission. Darrin stayed at Hotel Mas Pelegri in April 2023.

Darrin said “I spent a wonderful 11 nights at the Hotel Mas Pelegri near Serinya. The hosts, Gareth and Fiona were wonderful and run a great small hotel that really caters to cyclists. The setting, next to a horse farm and overlooking Mare du Mont couldn’t be more serene. It’s a million miles away from the hustle and bustle or Girona, yet close enough to Banyoles (by bike) for a nice lakeside lunch.

The breakfasts at the hotel were very good, the hosts would prepare omelettes, eggs, pancakes, toast, fruit, cheese and meat – as much as you wanted. It was a great way to prepare for a long day in the saddle. The dinners (I only had one) were also very good. I choose to eat after my long rides in Banyoles and then ride back to the hotel (about 10km). I still have a tough time with the 8pm and later dinner hour in Spain.

Being a little further North of Girona, the hotel gives you options around Mare du Mont and Olot. At the same time it also makes Vallter 2000 within reach. At about 160km door to door with a category 1 climb to over 2000 metres it makes for a long day – almost 8 hours for an old guy like me!

    – Close to Banyoles (15-20 min by bike) for a lunch or early dinner
    – Great hosts and staff that are always willing to go the extra mile to help out – provide route recommendation, assist in bike set-ups….
    – Also have a dog (big friendly lab) – they did keep the dog away from the guests (I would have preferred they let her roam free – I am a huge dog fan)
    – 20 min walk to Serinya – small village with a convenience store (for basics) and a bar/restaurant
    – 30 min from base of Mare du Mont and 30 min base of Rocacorba
    – No TV in room – not a problem and did not miss it
    – Solid and reliable wi-fi throughout hotel – including rooms (no charge)
    – Good comfortable beds”

Thanks to Darrin for his comments – click the link to Hotel Mas Pelegri in the article above to find out more.
