Bike hotels in northern Spain

Costa Brava

There are many reasons why Girona is considered to be the cycling capital of Europe. While there are some great Girona cycling hotels within the city, it often pays to explore further afield – you can then explore the quaint cobbled streets as the half-way point of your ride, giving you a destination to aim for.

Hotel Mas Pelegri

Hotel Mas Pelegri is a three-star country hotel that’s around 30 km from Girona. It’s set in a charming location with access to fantastic cycling routes, including a series of winding flat roads and a handful of trickier climbs if you’re feeling energetic. Rooms are comfortable and well-appointed, and there’s a 25m pool and yoga studio that you can use too.

Bookable extras include bike rentals and sports massages. There are coaches too, if you want a guide to help you explore the region. If you’re bringing your own bike, there is secure storage as well as bike mechanic services in case anything goes wrong.

  • We love: The quiet setting and the extensive cycle routes nearby.
  • Be aware: 3 course dinners are available each evening but the remote location means other dinner options are relatively limited.
  • Best for: Anyone who wants to explore this famous cycling region.

Costa Daurada

The Costa Daurada region, and in particular the area around Salou and Cambrils, has long been popular for family holidays. As a cycling destination, the area is only recently emerging. While professional teams have trained here, it tends to be a quieter choice for a Spanish cycling tour. Don’t overlook it – the coastal roads and hilly climbs are beautiful.

Estival Eldorado

Estival Eldorado is a family resort near Cambrils Old Town. This four-star hotel has a huge selection of facilities including swimming pools (including slides for younger guests), mini golf, a spa-gym and more. Rooms are simple but comfy, with some offering a sea view.

Cyclists will love it here too as long as you aren’t looking for a small, quiet, boutique hotel. The on-site facility offers bike rental and storage, with dedicated spaces for repairs and cleaning. Flexible meal times are offered for those wanting to set off early, and picnics can be prepared. A selection of organised routes are offered across multiple difficulties if you need some inspiration.

  • We love: The balance of family and cycling facilities.

  • Best for: Families who want to try a cycling tour of Spain.

San Sebastián, northern Spain

With the Tour de France 2023 starting in Spain’s Basque country, what better time than to consider a holiday here! The weather in this part of the world can be quite variable and it does rain – but the region is noted for its excellent routes along with its great restaurants, perfect for an end-of-day treat.

Hotel Zubieta

Hotel Zubieta is a three-star hotel, housed in an 18th-century building located just south of Lekeitio. The position is excellent – you can easily wander into town to enjoy some fine dining, but you don’t have to navigate many busy streets before you’re out exploring the Basque region on your bike.

While the hotel is small, that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in terms of services for cyclists. There’s a storage area for your bikes, and a small repair shop and a bike washing service. Luggage transport is available and you can enjoy free WiFi so you can stay up to date on weather forecasts, and map out your routes.

  • We love: The location, close to the quaint town centre but with amazing routes on the doorstep.
  • Be aware: It’s a smaller hotel, so not suited to larger travelling groups if you’re all bringing bikes.
  • Best for: Exploring quieter cycling routes between Bilbao and San Sebastian.
