Bike hotels in the valley and surrounding area, near Alpe d’Huez
The advantage of staying at the bottom of the Alpe d’Huez climb is that you can end each day on a descent back down to the valley, or a flat ride in along the valley floor. The valley is also where you find most services and facilities. The downside is of course that it’s busier than a remote mountain chalet or even a hotel in Huez village. But everything is relative of course; the valley towns and villages are not exactly cities!
Gite - Auberge Le Chamois, Col d'Ornon$Back to map

Set at the summit of Col d'Ornon opposite the imposing Taillefer Massif, Gite - Auberge Le Chamois offers laid-back accommodation in the heart of the French Alps. It's a small rustic guesthouse with 7 comfortable rooms that can accommodate 1 to 25 people, making it ideal for both individual cyclists and groups. The auberge features a restaurant, bar/lounge, and a terrace with stunning mountain views.
The charm of Le Chamois is that it is away from the busy ski resorts and valley towns, with a friendly welcome and good food. Don't expect the luxury and amenities of a large hotel. While there is great riding around the Col d'Ornon, this is not next to the most famous Tour de France climbs. This is a good base for rural peace and quiet and mountain vistas, rather than bagging as many famous cols as possible.
Guests can choose from various accommodation options, including dormitory-style rooms and family rooms, with rates starting from very low prices. The guesthouse offers flexible booking options, including single night stays, weekends, or full weeks, with half-board, full-board, or self-catering options available.
- We love: The prime location at the top of Col d'Ornon, away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts.
- Be aware: This is a small, basic guesthouse. The location, welcome and food is wonderful, but don't expect high luxury.
- Best for: Cyclists looking for a comfortable, no-frills base, with the flexibility to cater to both individual riders and groups.
