Why go on a Namibia bike tour?

Namibia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world (source).

That means quiet roads, big skies and minimal traffic. It also means you can go for hours – even days – without seeing another person. The riding is all about immersion in this wild landscape!

You will find a mix of surfaces here – from smooth asphalt, to rough gravel and sandy tracks. A mountain bike or fatbike is the best choice, especially if you want to leave the roads behind. There are options for all levels of rider, from shorter lodge-based loops to multi-day expeditions with vehicle support and Safari camps.

Where to ride in Namibia

Some of the best cycling is found off the beaten track.

In Damaraland, for example, you can ride through dry riverbeds, rocky outcrops and remote valleys where desert-adapted elephant and black rhino still roam free. These are true wilderness rides, usually guided and supported.

In contrast, Swakopmund offers a completely different experience. This coastal town is known for its lively atmosphere, good restaurants and nearby singletrack. It is also the place to try fatbiking on the dunes – a fun and unique way to explore the desert.

Further south, near Sossusvlei, you can ride along the edge of the dune belt on smooth asphalt roads with vast desert views in every direction.

Most cycling tours include a mix of these areas, often combined with visits to places such as Etosha National Park or the Skeleton Coast.
