Cycling in Egypt offers cyclists the chance to experience one of the world’s most historic landscapes from a completely different perspective.

Egypt has a long-established tourism industry, but cycling still sits well outside the mainstream.

That is just starting to change, with guided bike tours and bike-and-boat trips beginning to offer a more active way to explore the country. Independent cycling in Egypt remains difficult, with obstacles including heat, dense urban traffic, safety, security regulations, restricted routes and checkpoints.

What makes cycling in Egypt different?

Here’s what makes cycling in Egypt stand out:

  • The Nile Valley provides a natural focus for a cycling trip. Much of the riding around Luxor and Aswan follows the inhabited corridor around the river, where farmland and settlements contrast sharply with the surrounding desert.
  • Ancient sites around Luxor are concentrated within a relatively small area. The Nile separates the East Bank, home to Karnak and Luxor Temple, from the West Bank and sites including the Valley of the Kings, with farmland and local communities in between.
  • Aswan and the southern Nile offer a different landscape, with islands, granite outcrops and strong Nubian heritage. Philae and the archaeological sites around Aswan also form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching south towards Abu Simbel.
  • Villages, farmland and local roads are as much a part of the riding as the headline sights. Agricultural areas, sugarcane fields, date palms and local streets offer a closer look at everyday life along the Nile.

How to experience it

  • Bike and boat trips along the Nile combine cycling with sightseeing, cultural visits and river travel. Our article on boat and bike tours in Egypt explains how this style of trip works, what the riding is like and what to know before you go.
  • Cycling events are also part of Egypt’s growing cycling scene. The Galala Challenge, first held in 2018, takes riders towards Ain Sokhna and Galala Mountain, with 50, 90 and 150 kilometre distances. The longest option also includes a timed section on the Galala climb.
