Part 2: What are the best places (and routes) in Austria for gravel cycling?
Austria is packed with regions that are great for gravel cycling.
The map below highlights some of the key places mentioned in this article and there are more details on each below. Hover over the map pins to see the place names.
1. Western Austria
Western Austria includes the regions of Tyrol, Vorarlberg and parts of SalzburgerLand. It is known for its dramatic Alpine landscapes, with terrain ranging from steep mountain passes and rugged forest trails to peaceful river valleys and open meadows.
Gravel.Tirol, Tyrol region
Gravel.Tirol in the Tyrolean Außerfern is a collaboration between four top cycling areas: the Lechtal, Reutte Nature Park Region, Tannheimer Tal and the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena.
The Tyrolean Außerfern is a remote and mountainous region in the northwestern part of Tyrol, Austria. It is geographically separate from the rest of Tyrol and shares borders with Germany to the north (Bavaria and Allgäu) and Vorarlberg to the west.
The cycling areas found in Gravel.Tirol offer over 1,000 kilometres of gravel cycling trails and more than 22,000 metres of climbing. Gravel.Tirol brings together a network of 18 gravel bike tours in Austria, running from the Zugspitze to Lech, Füssen and Oberjoch. These cross-border trails follow the German-Bavarian border and offer everything from remote forest tracks to open riverbanks and steep alpine climbs.
Each area has its own unique feel:
- Lechtal: is known for its crystal-clear summit lakes and wide gravel banks, perfect for peaceful, flowing rides through Alpine scenery.
- Reutte Nature Park Region: is one of the most pristine in Tyrol. It is shaped by the Lech river and Tyrol’s second-largest lake, making it a central hub for the surrounding routes.
- Tannheimer Tal: is another pristine and wild landscape home to meadows and steep peaks. It is a hidden playground of natural beauty and trail variety.
- Tiroler Zugspitz Arena: is where things get steeper and more intense. This is the place for those who want a real test, with climbs that lead to high views and rugged landscapes under the watchful gaze of the Zugspitze.

Hohe Salve, Tyrol region
Hohe Salve is located in the Kitzbühel Alps in Tyrol, western Austria. It sits between the Inntal valley to the north and the Brixental valley to the south. The region centres around the Hohe Salve mountain, which stands at 1,828 metres and offers panoramic views of the surrounding Alpine landscape.
It’s a fantastic place for a gravel bike adventure to begin, with big climbs, quiet trails and picture-perfect panoramas in every direction.
The gravel routes in this area wind through scenic side valleys such as Kelchsau and Windau. Along the way, you are treated to views of the Kaiser Mountains, the Hohe Tauern, the Zillertal Alps and the Inntal valley. The terrain offers something for everyone, from long, steady climbs to relaxed valley rides through meadows and forest tracks.
Rides in the Hohe Salve region are as much about culture as they are about climbs. Gravel routes pass through charming Tyrolean villages, with chances to stop and enjoy local food and drink. The region also makes it easy to plan longer rides. Mountain railways carry bikes at a low cost, and the guest card includes public transport — ideal for one-way routes or longer days out.

SalzburgerLand region
SalzburgerLand is home to some of Austria’s most exciting gravel terrain. From the Salzburger Sportwelt to the expansive Pinzgau area – Austria’s largest biking region – there are plenty of trails to discover.
This north-central region of Austria borders Bavaria, Tyrol, Upper Austria, Styria and Carinthia; it offers everything from mountain passes to lakeside trails.
Pinzgau
The Pinzgau region of SalzburgerLand is one of Austria’s largest interconnected bike regions. It is already a firm favourite among mountain bikers, and gravel cyclists are now discovering its off-road potential. It comprises the following key destinations:
- Saalbach Hinterglemm ski resort: This popular winter resort transforms into a playground for off-road cycling in summer. The area has fully embraced gravel riding, offering a growing network of trails that weave through Alpine meadows, forests and quiet mountain roads.
- Leogang ski resort: Located just down the valley from Saalbach, Leogang is another resort that has expanded its cycling offer beyond mountain biking in Austria to include gravel riders. It is well connected to the rest of the region by trail and lift systems, making it easy to link routes and explore.
- The town of Fieberbrunn: On the Tyrolean side of the region, Fieberbrunn is a quieter but equally scenic option. Tucked in a peaceful valley, it offers a more tranquil starting point for gravel adventures, with easy connections to the trails of both Salzburg and Tyrol.
This region is ideal for a gravel cycling holiday in the Austrian Alps; it offers a huge choice of trails that can be tailored to suit all levels, whether you are after a relaxed spin or a demanding challenge. The routes are packed with natural highlights — think panoramic peaks, alpine meadows and winding forest roads.
The cycling infrastructure here is also excellent. You will find everything you need: bike hire, guided gravel tours, lift access and accommodation that caters for cyclists. The flexibility of the trail network and the support available make it easy to plan long days out or shorter loops with comfort stops along the way.

Long-distance cycling routes in SalzburgerLand
Two new long-distance tours perfectly illustrate SalzburgerLand’s great riding.
Both routes are multi-day gravel rides that mix forest trails, gravel tracks, mountain roads and river paths. Water is a key theme on both routes, with plenty of chances to ride past lakes, streams and Alpine springs — all with mountain views in every direction!
The Zarte (gentle)
460 kilometres with 6,700 metres in elevation gain; it’s a great option for gravel cyclists to complete over 5-7 days.
The Harte (tough)
650 kilometres with 12,700 metres in elevation gain; it can be experienced by fit gravel bikers in 10 to 12 days.
2. Southern Austria
Southern Austria encompasses regions including Carinthia and southern parts of Styria; it offers a unique blend of Alpine and Mediterranean influences, both in landscape and culture.
The terrain is more rolling than in the high Alps, with quiet backroads, forest tracks and vineyard trails leading through wide valleys, gentle hills and scenic lakesides.
Lake Wörthersee, Carinthia region
Located in southern Austria, close to the borders with Italy and Slovenia, Lake Wörthersee is a gravel cycling paradise in Carinthia. With its mild climate, turquoise waters and Mediterranean feel, the region offers the perfect mix of nature, culture and adventure.
The region around Lake Wörthersee caters for every type of rider. You will find gentle loops for relaxed spins and more challenging routes for those seeking a test. A highlight is the Gravel Speedway Rosental, a 46-kilometre route full of scenic riding and cultural stops, including Rosegg Castle.
For a longer adventure, the Drau cycle path offers a brilliant combination of riverside gravel and open landscapes, while the Ossiacher Tauern and Moosburger Land offer more natural, rolling terrain.
Wörthersee is also home to two major gravel events. The UCI Gravel Race Wörthersee takes place each spring in stylish Velden am Wörthersee, while the Jeroboam Wörthersee in autumn offers three different routes for all levels of gravel riders. Both events blend challenge and enjoyment, with the lake always at the centre of the experience.

Gravel routes take you through charming towns such as Bad Radkersburg, past local wine estates and along the border with Austria’s easternmost region, Burgenland. On clear days, you can enjoy far-reaching views across to Slovenia and Hungary.
The region enjoys a mild climate, which means the gravel cycling season starts early, often from March. The season officially kicks off with the AnRADeln gravel event in April. More on that below.

Tips for gravel riding in Austria
What equipment do you need for gravel cycling in Austria?
To enjoy gravel cycling routes in Austria safely and comfortably, it is important to have the right kit. Here is a simple checklist to help you prepare.
First of all, a gravel bike is essential. This should have wider tyres (between 35 and 45 mm) for grip and comfort on mixed terrain. Your bike should also have disc brakes and a wide-range gear setup to handle the steep climbs and loose surfaces. You should also make sure you have a multitool, spare inner tube and pump with you for any basic repairs on the trail.
As for gear, breathable, lightweight clothing will keep you comfortable on your bike. You should also pack a wind or rain jacket to stay protected against any changing conditions. Gloves and sunglasses are also good for grip and eye protection.
If you are planning a longer tour or multi-day trip, consider adding bikepacking bags to carry clothing, tools and supplies.

What is the best time of year for gravel cycling in Austria?
Austria offers a long and flexible cycling season, with gravel riding possible from early spring through to late autumn.
Be aware! While some high-altitude routes may be snow-covered in winter, lower regions and the southeast of the country often stay rideable all year round.
The main gravel cycling season runs from late March to the end of October, when the weather is generally mild and stable. Spring brings fresh greenery and quieter trails, summer offers long days and warmer temperatures, and autumn is perfect for scenic rides through colourful forests and vineyard harvests.
Can you hire gravel bikes?
If you are not bringing your own bike, renting a gravel bike in Austria is generally easy and convenient. Many Gravelbike Holidays partner hotels offer on-site bike rental, giving you direct access to well-maintained gravel bikes without leaving the hotel.
If in-house rental is not available, most hotels work closely with local bike shops nearby and can help arrange a suitable bike for your trip. It is a good idea to book in advance, especially during peak season, and to check if the bike comes with essential extras like a saddle bag, pump or repair kit.
Highway code and travel information
As ever, it’s a good idea to check current travel information before you book and travel. For UK visitors, the UK government travel information pages for Austria are here.
You should also read and follow Austria’s highway code.
You should also ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers all the activities you plan on undertaking.
