Considering cycling in Croatia?
If you’re looking for a European destination that oozes Mediterranean charm, natural beauty and historical treasures, a cycling holiday in Croatia should be high on your list.
You’ll find some of Europe’s most varied and scenic riding here, from quiet island roads backed by the azure waters of the Adriatic to challenging mountain climbs in Croatia’s green and rugged interior. It’s also appealing because there’s lots to see and experience: shaped by Roman, Venetian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman influences, Croatia’s rich past and blend of cultures is reflected in its architecture, cuisine and traditions.
In this article, we hear from Toni Hrvatin, the Destination Product Development Manager at Valamar Riviera, Croatia’s largest hotel group. With a network of bike-friendly hotels located in top cycling destinations across Croatia, Valamar, with its brand Valamar Loves Bike, has a deep understanding of cyclists’ specific needs.
Read on to discover the best places to ride, what to expect, and how to plan the ultimate Croatia cycling tour.
Part 1: Why should cyclists visit Croatia?
With sunny skies, pleasant coastal breezes, and mild weather almost year-round, Croatia is the kind of place that practically begs to be explored by bike. Whether you’re into challenging climbs or scenic coastal cycling, there’s something for every kind of rider here!
Natural beauty
Croatia is home to some of Europe’s most idyllic scenery.
Beautiful coastal roads offer mesmerising views of sparkling, turquoise waters and island-dotted horizons, while inland cycling routes pass through gorgeous vineyards, olive groves, scented pine forests and impressive waterfalls.
Climbs to conquer
For those who love challenges, the rugged, mountainous interior of Croatia delivers wilder landscapes and rewarding climbs, such as:
- Učka: Učka is a mountain range overlooking the Istrian peninsula and the Kvarner Bay, famous for its panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and lush natural parks. The climb to Vojak peak is popular among cyclists for its challenging ascent and stunning vistas.
- Biokovo (Sveti Jure): Biokovo is a rugged coastal mountain range, with Sveti Jure as its highest peak, offering one of the toughest and most scenic climbs in Croatia, a favourite for cyclists seeking altitude and dramatic Mediterranean landscapes.
- Oprtalj: Oprtalj is a small hilltop town in Istria surrounded by rolling vineyards and olive groves; its climb is gentle but rewarding, with charming medieval architecture and peaceful rural views.
- Skitača: Skitača is a remote village nestled in the hills of Eastern Istria, with quiet roads and natural scenery, making its climb a tranquil experience away from the more touristy coastal areas.
- Alan (Stinica): Alan, near Stinica on the mainland side, features climbs that serve as gateways to the northern Adriatic islands, with a mix of coastal views and forested sections ideal for mountain biking and road cycling.
- Full Moon MTB trail on the island of Krk: The Moon Plateau above Baška on the island of Krk is one of the most attractive and unique places for mountain biking on the Adriatic. The ascent combines a challenging, technically interesting trail with impressive natural scenery. Starting from Baška, the climb is demanding due to its length and gradient, but not too difficult for experienced MTB riders. The Moon Plateau is recognisable by its bare, rocky terrain resembling the surface of the Moon, giving the trail a visual appeal.
Cycling pedigree
Croatia has a growing reputation on the international cycling scene.
The Giro d’Italia passed through back in 2004, and today the country hosts several major events, including:

- CRORace: A UCI pro-level stage race attracting top teams
- Istrian Spring Trophies: UCI-sanctioned races
- 4 Islands MTB Croatia: A unique stage race held on four Adriatic islands
These events highlight the quality of both road and MTB cycling across the country. Find out more below.

Croatia offers more than just great riding; it is a country shaped by centuries of fascinating history. From the Romans and Venetians to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Croatia’s complex heritage is visible in everything, including architecture, language, food and music.
You can explore ancient Roman cities like Split, Pula, Poreč and Rovinj, where impressive palaces, crumbling amphitheatres and cobbled streets immerse you in Croatia’s rich past.
Head inland to discover peaceful villages and medieval hilltop towns such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Motovun, or take to the islands – Krk, Rab, and Hvar – each with its own unique mix of culture, architecture and natural beauty.
With short distances between highlights, it is easy to combine cycling Croatia with sightseeing, food stops, and even a refreshing swim in the Adriatic!
Warm hospitality
Croatians are known for their friendly and relaxed nature.
Typically, you can expect a warm welcome, and especially outside of the busiest tourist hotspots, many locals are usually happy to offer directions, share local tips, or simply stop for a chat.

Part 2: Overview of Croatia from a cyclist’s perspective
Location of Croatia
Croatia is located in southeastern Europe, along the eastern edge of the Adriatic Sea.
It shares borders with Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the north, Serbia to the east, and Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro to the southeast. Across the Adriatic to the west lies Italy.
Take a look at the map below to see some of the key places mentioned in this article. Hover over the map pins to see the place names.
Terrain of Croatia
Croatia’s long, island-strewn coastline stretches for over 1,700 kilometres and includes more than 1,000 islands, islets and reefs. Inland, the terrain shifts from flat plains in the north to forested hills and dramatic mountains in the south and east.
Whilst Croatia has several regions, in this article, we focus on three key coastal areas popular with cyclists:
Istria
Istria lies in the northwest, near Slovenia. The terrain here is a mix of rolling hills and coastal flats, ideal for relaxed touring, scenic loops and road cycling in Croatia.
Gravel riders will also find plenty to explore along inland paths and vineyard tracks. Think hilltop towns, coastal roads and lush green countryside.
Find out more about cycling in this region below.

Kvarner
Kvarner sits just below the region of Istria, around the Kvarner Gulf and its islands.
This region includes a mix of islands and inland climbs. It is perfect for long, varied rides that combine ferries, sea views and testing elevation. Island hopping by bike is a highlight here, with popular cycling routes on Krk, Rab and Cres.
Find out more about cycling in this region below.

Dalmatia
Dalmatia runs further south along the coast, from Zadar to Dubrovnik. It is home to undulating coastal roads and steep inland climbs. This region is best suited to more experienced road cyclists and those looking for challenging mountain biking rides.
Inland, you will find mountainous terrain and rugged natural parks, while the coast offers dramatic cliffside routes and gorgeous Adriatic views.

What are the roads and drivers like?
Cyclists are generally well-received in Croatia. The country’s focus on tourism means locals are friendly, helpful and used to seeing riders on the roads. While most drivers are respectful, particularly in cycling hotspots, mutual consideration is important for the best experience.
Roads in Croatia range from quiet country lanes to busier coastal routes. The roads are generally in good condition and well maintained. I ride my road bike with 26mm tyres and I dont have any issues!
It is best to avoid cycling through large towns or major tourist areas during peak season, as traffic and crowds can make riding less comfortable. For a more enjoyable experience, stick to quieter routes or ride during off-peak times, such as early mornings or late afternoons.
Cycling infrastructure
Mountain bikers will find well-maintained forest tracks and natural trails, free from traffic and perfect for off-road exploring.
For road cyclists, there are plenty of low-traffic roads offering smooth, quiet conditions ideal for long rides and scenic loops.
Be aware! Croatia is currently lacking traffic-free asphalted cycle paths. There are some in urban areas, but in general, these are not that widespread currently.
What kind of cyclist is Croatia for?
Croatia is a brilliant destination for a wide range of cyclists; the country offers excellent riding options for road cycling, gravel cycling, mountain biking and leisure cycling. Quiet tarmac roads, scenic gravel routes and natural trails mean you can choose the terrain that best fits your interests and bike type. Boat and bike tours are also popular with cyclists looking to explore multiple islands in one week.
Fitness levels
Your fitness level will influence where to go. Destinations like Poreč and Rab are ideal for families and leisure cyclists and offer flat or rolling terrain that requires only a basic level of fitness.
In contrast, areas like Rabac, Krk, Hvar, and Makarska feature steeper climbs and more technical trails, better suited to fitter cyclists and those with more experience.
Family cycling
Croatia has many family-friendly hotels and campsites, especially outside the peak season.
Marked cycling routes are a good choice for families, as they are easier to follow and usually cater to a range of skill levels.
We’d suggest avoiding unmarked or technical trails if you are riding with children or beginners as they could contain hazards.

Located on the western coast of Istria, Poreč is a fantastic destination for cyclists of all kinds. The surrounding terrain is mostly flat to gently rolling, offering ideal conditions for road cyclists, families, and leisure riders who want scenic routes without strenuous climbs. It leads through old tunnels and over viaducts, connecting some of Istria’s most beautiful towns. From Poreč, cyclists can easily reach iconic hilltop villages like Motovun and Grožnjan, each offering stunning views and authentic local charm.

Part 5: Practicalities of cycling in Croatia
What is the best time to cycle in Croatia?
In our opinion, the best time for cycling in Croatia is during the pre-season (March to mid-June) and post-season (September to October). These months bring milder temperatures, lower humidity, and quieter roads, making them ideal for longer, comfortable rides.
Spring offers lush green landscapes and blooming nature, while autumn brings warm seas and golden countryside views. You will also avoid the busy summer tourist crowds, which means safer and more relaxed cycling.
Be aware! From mid-June to mid-September, cycling can be more difficult. Temperatures regularly exceed 30°C, especially in coastal areas like Dalmatia, Kvarner, and Istria, making riding in the heat uncomfortable. This is also peak tourist season, with increased traffic, crowded routes, and busy resorts – not ideal for cyclists seeking peaceful roads or scenic solitude.
That said, there are some regional differences to keep in mind:
- Istria and Kvarner (including Poreč, Rabac, Krk and Rab) tend to have more manageable summer temperatures compared to Dalmatia, and are slightly less crowded, making early mornings or late afternoons a viable option even in July and August.
- Dalmatian destinations like Hvar and Makarska get much hotter and busier in summer. These are best explored outside of peak season, when cooler weather and emptier roads allow you to truly enjoy the riding and views.
What are the key cycling events in Croatia?
Croatia is home to several high-profile cycling events, attracting both amateur riders and elite professionals. With beautiful scenery and well-organised races, the country has become a fixture on the international cycling calendar.
Istrian Spring Trophies: March
Held in early spring, this series of UCI-sanctioned races includes two one-day events (men’s and women’s) and a men’s multi-stage race.
It is seen as a proving ground for emerging talent, with past participants including Tadej Pogačar, Primož Roglič, and Peter Sagan. For fans and riders alike, it offers a glimpse of the sport’s next big names in action!

4 Islands MTB Croatia: April
Part of the globally renowned Epic Series, this mountain bike stage race takes riders across four spectacular islands – Unije, Lošinj, Cres and Krk. Each island delivers its own blend of rocky trails, forest paths and sea views.
Known for its technical challenges and incredible scenery, it is one of the most prestigious MTB events in Europe. As a sister event to the Absa Cape Epic, it shares the same spirit of adventure and excellence.
Istria300: September
One of Europe’s fastest-growing amateur road cycling events, Istria300 attracts up to 4,500 riders each year. Set in and around the coastal town of Poreč, the event offers multiple route options through Istria’s rolling hills, vineyards and seaside towns.
Held on closed roads, the event provides a professional-level experience for everyday cyclists, encouraging participants to “Ride Your Limits.”
CRO Race: September and October
A UCI professional stage race, the CRO Race brings top-level international cycling teams to Croatia each year. Covering routes across coastal roads, mountain passes, and historic towns, it showcases the country’s scenic diversity.
The race is broadcast in 140 countries, serving as both a major sporting event and a platform for Croatian tourism.

Is bike hire available in Croatia?
Prices, services and bike brands often change. Please let us know if anything is incorrect.
Bike hire is widely available across Croatia, especially in popular cycling destinations and cities such as Zagreb and Split. Whether you’re into road cycling, mountain biking, or leisurely rides, you’ll find a variety of rental options to suit your needs.
In Poreč, you can also find a full range of bikes, including road bikes, gravel bikes, and options with electronic shifting. In Rabac, there are also options for e-bikes, both hardtail and full-suspension models.
Other destinations around the country offer a solid selection of basic bikes for riders looking for more straightforward options. So, while bringing your own bike is always an option, you’ll have no problem renting a quality bike wherever you go in Croatia.
Valamar suggests hiring bikes directly from their bike centres in Poreč, Rabac, Rab, Krk, Baška and Makarska. In each of these centres, you can find the spare parts, supplements, and additional equipment.
Be aware! You will struggle to find big bike shops with exclusive cycling brands (bikes, clothes, etc) on the Adriatic coast
How can you get to Croatia?
Getting to Croatia is straightforward, with good air and land connections from across Europe. Most international visitors arrive by plane, and there are several airports well located for cycling holidays.
- Pula is ideal for access to Istria (Poreč, Rabac)
- Rijeka and Zagreb are good for reaching Kvarner (Krk, Rab)
- Split is the main hub for Dalmatia (Hvar, Makarska)
International train travel is also possible via Zagreb, with services from neighbouring countries like Slovenia, Hungary and Austria. From there, you can continue by bus, domestic flight or car hire.
Airport transfers are widely available, and many private transfer companies cater to cyclists and can accommodate bike boxes with prior notice. It’s best to pre-book your transfer, especially in peak season. Some hotels and cycling tour providers also offer transfer services, so check ahead when booking your accommodation.
Be aware! We do not offer this transfer service as part of our package, and this should be arranged with private companies who specialise in this service.

Do I need to do any training for a Croatia cycling trip?
You don’t need to be a pro, but a basic level of fitness helps, especially if you’re tackling hills on the island of Hvar or in the Makarska region, or riding longer distances.
For easier routes like parts of the Parenzana Trail, or casual rides in Poreč, Krk and Rab, light training is enough.
Be aware! Croatia’s islands are home to some steep climbs that should not be underestimated. If you are worried about climbing hills, you could consider an e-bike instead.
What should I pack for a Croatia bike tour?
Alongside lightweight, breathable clothing to cycle in, don’t forget to bring the essentials, including your helmet, bike lights, water bottles, repair kit, and any snacks.
In summer, carry extra water and be mindful of hydration and nutrition during rides, especially inland, where refill points can sometimes be limited.
You will also want to bring sun cream to protect yourself from the sun and swimwear if you want to enjoy a refreshing post-ride dip!

Do I need to speak the language?
English is widely spoken in tourist areas, but learning a few Croatian words is a great way to connect with locals.
Locals appreciate the effort, and it can be very helpful if you’re in a smaller village or need assistance. Try greetings like:
- Dobar dan (Good day)
- Hvala (Thank you)
- Molim (Please/You’re welcome)
Cyclists might also find the following terms useful to know:
- Bicikl (bicycle)
- Guma (tyre)
- Cesta (road)
- Brdo (hill)

Is it possible to travel on public transport with your bike?
Be aware! Public transport with bikes is limited, especially during peak travel times. Some buses and trains allow them, but availability and policies vary. Always check with transport companies in advance and expect to pay a small fee.
For the most freedom and access to quieter rides, having your own transport is a better option. Hiring a car is also useful if you want to reach different cycling bases or access remote routes more easily. It gives you flexibility to explore different areas without relying on local transport.
Is it easy to find food and drink on cycling trips in Croatia?
Convenience stores and bakeries (pekara) are common and stock things like sandwiches, fruit, pastries and burek, a flaky, savoury pastry great for on-the-go.
But beware! Some shops close on Sundays, especially inland.
Tap water is safe to drink in Croatia, and small towns usually have fountains or shops to refill bottles.
What is the food like?
Croatia’s cuisine is as varied as its landscapes, blending Mediterranean, Central European and Balkan flavours. Each region has its own specialities, offering a delicious way to refuel whilst exploring Croatia by bike!
Along the coast, enjoy fresh seafood like grilled fish, squid and octopus, often simply prepared with olive oil and herbs. Inland, try peka, a slow-cooked dish of meat or seafood with vegetables, and soparnik, a savoury pie with chard and garlic.
In Istria, don’t miss fuži pasta, truffle dishes, pršut (dry-cured ham), and excellent local olive oil. Dalmatia is known for grilled lamb, local cheeses, and fritule, small sugary pastries that go well with a morning coffee.
For a kick, sample kulen, a spicy sausage, or sip on rakija, a strong fruit brandy offered in many flavours. You can also pair your meals with delicious local wines – Istria and Pelješac are standout regions.
Safety tips for cycling in Croatia?
To stay safe and legal on Croatian roads and Croatia bike tours, it’s important to follow the local cycling rules. Helmets are required for cyclists under 16 and strongly recommended for everyone.
Cyclists must ride in a single file on roads and use designated bike lanes where available.
If there’s no lane, stay far to the right. At night or in poor visibility outside towns, wear a reflective vest or clothing, and ensure your bike has front (white) and rear (red) lights.
Croatia also has zero tolerance for alcohol while cycling, so ride responsibly.
