For this ride, my friend Jean-Claude and I drove by car from Tamarin to Mahébourg. Jean-Claude cycled the first 50 kilometres whilst I drove the car, then we switched so I could cycle the next stretch. If you wanted to cycle the whole route, you would need to arrange your own pick-up and collection from the start and finish!
It took us around 1 hour 20 minutes to cover the 55 kilometres from Tamarin to Mahébourg. Cycling between Mahébourg and Pointe aux Piments in Mauritius offers a rich and diverse experience, blending coastal beauty, cultural highlights, and varying terrain. We drove back to Tamarin from Pointe aux Piments.
The route is mostly flat along the coast with some rolling hills, but no steep climbs! There are plenty of opportunities to stop at beautiful beaches along the way. This is a lovely ride offering an insight into the northern landscapes of Mauritius island.
Highlights
- This ride is on the east coast of Mauritius between Mahébourg and Rivière du Rempart. From Rivière du Rempart to Grand Gaube, you are riding mostly along the stunning southeast coast. There are some flat inland stretches included, featuring riding beside sugar cane fields. They were harvested when I rode this route.
- From Grand Gaube through Cap Malheureux to Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, and Pointe aux Piments you ride along the north coast of Mauritius. The beaches are stunning and the atmosphere is tranquil. Here it seems that life happens at a slower pace.

Tips
- I found that the road surface was excellent on this ride.
- The best time to ride in Mauritius is early in the morning, leaving at around 6:30 – 7:00 am (or earlier if you can!). For example, I found that on a Sunday morning at 7:00 am, the traffic was pretty non-existent.
- The traffic is low from Mahébourg until you reach the Grand Baie area. The town of Grand Baie is a dynamic tourist destination. Grand Baie can experience moderate to heavy traffic depending time of the day. Personally, I did not find the traffic that bad.
- The seaside and the view are stunning. Take the time to soak it all in.
